The 'Joseph Conrad' in calm weather
“I chose the Polish author’s name as fitting for the ship and for her voyage, and as giving, too, myself and all her people something to live up to; for Conrad was a noble and high-minded man with great ideals and determination, who had overcome almost impossible difficulties and risen to great heights. The ship was fit to bear his name, and for such a ship there could be no better.”

The 3-masted frigate 'Joseph Conrad' was built in 1882 in Copenhagen. She is 111 feet long. She was originally named 'George Stage' and until 1934 was used as a training ship for the Danish Merchant Marine. Under Captain Alan Villiers, the 'Joseph Conrad' sailed for more than two years on a 58,000 mile voyage, circumnavigating the world. In 1936, she was purchased by George Huntington Hartford and was used as a private yacht. In 1939, she was transferred to the U.S. Maritime Commission and was used as a training ship until 1945. Since 1947 she is anchored at Mystic Seaport / Connecticut.
